Shamokin Residents to Benefit from $3 Million in State Funding for Community Projects

Residents of Shamokin City and the surrounding area will benefit from $3 million in state funding that will fund two separate projects aimed at increasing access to quality health care and restoring existing buildings for new uses.

The first project will receive $2 million in state funds to restore and repurpose three buildings in Shamokin. The F&S Building served as the home for F&S Brewery. This building will be restored with the hopes of attracting a microbrewery to the facility. The Lark Mill/Coal Hole will restore a mill building and dilapidated restaurant into a 40-room hotel with the potential to expand to 80 rooms. The third aspect of the first project will transform the Jones Hardware building into a 50-room hotel.

The second project will receive $1 million in state funds to serve the health care needs of Shamokin residents and people in the surrounding area. The funds will help pay for construction of a new, three-story building in downtown Shamokin. The first floor will host a pharmacy and urgent care facility. The second floor will house Primary Health Network Primary Care and Behavioral Health. The third floor will be occupied by Geisinger Health System Women’s Care and Pediatrics plus other medical specialists.

Funding for these projects is being provided through the state Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program.

The 107th District includes the following Columbia County communities: TOWNSHIPS of Cleveland, Conyngham, Franklin and Locust and the BOROUGHS of Ashland (Columbia County Portion) and Centralia; the following Northumberland County communities: the CITY of Shamokin and the TOWNSHIPS of Coal, East Cameron, Jordan, Mount Carmel, Ralpho, Shamokin, Upper Mahanoy, Washington, West Cameron and Zerbe and the BOROUGHS of Kulpmont, Marion Heights and Mount Carmel; and all of Montour County.
